Art of the Asshole
A giant stinking pile of people have established the argument that the points I make here could be expressed with less venom. The largest contributing factor being the CultFit article. Essentially these people are telling me to “be nice”. I irreverently make fun of shit when I could have written a carefully inoffensive and amiable little thesis regarding said topic. They say that I shouldn’t exaggerate, don’t say mean things about people, and to get all my facts together in nice neat little bite size packages wrapped in a pink ribbon.
All I can say to those people is “fuck you”.
First of all I am not a nice person, I’m a mean bastard, and nobody is going to persuade me otherwise. If you are a generally nice person then you should write your criticisms in a generally nice manner, in that way being true to your own voice. There are Hallmark cards in every gas station. On the other hand if you are an asshole, well, then be a fucking asshole.
Sometimes people need a punch in the mouth before they’re ready to hear what you have to say, myself included. I am not the first person to make many of the assertions found on this website, and I am certainly not the last. The difference is that all the other sources of criticism have been silenced, hushed up, ignored, deleted, belittled, brushed aside, discounted, and disregarded into oblivion. The ideas presented were barely given a second thought and I can’t stand the idea of engaging in pointless preaching.
Anger, in healthy doses, can be good for the soul. It keeps your brain-piece active. If you’re angry then at least you’re still alive. Many people have encountered inner conflict, strife, and intellectual anguish over some of the ideas proposed here. Would these people have thought twice about the situation if it was just a concerned admonition? A small black and white Surgeon General’s warning on the side of a pack of smokes? Would anyone even care? The answer is no. Not until the Marlboro Man is talking through a nasty hole in his throat are people ready to listen.
True, in the end, many people will continue to stick their fingers in their ears and hum really loudly to themselves, “I believe in unicorns! And rainbows! And a world where no one is mean, ever! So I am not going to let a big bad meanie bully me away from doing something I love! I will continue to persist in support of my fragile little beliefs, my ridiculous little life and my meaningless little actions even if it is self destructive, surrenders my freedoms, and can’t be rationally defended. La! La! La! La! La! La!”
Like I’ve said before, you can’t de-stupid everyone.
Actually, it was never really my intent to change the world or the Internet or whatever. I don’t have that high opinion of myself. It has been said by commenters that many of these issues needed to be brought to light, but no one wanted to be the asshole that brought them up. People fear judgment and retribution for these kinds of thoughts. Fortunately for the people who had similar thoughts bouncing around in their skulls, I relish the idea of being the asshole that brings shit up with no other intent but to inspire some thought provoking discussion. I was completely successful in this regard, boo-yah!
Furthermore, I have read a small handful of replies where people have claimed to see things from a whole new perspective and as a result, changed their actions. That right there was far more than I had ever hoped to accomplish. Again, I do not have very high expectations when it comes to human intelligence.
In the end, if you are the type who is emotionally invested in this overly PC care bear world that is rooted in celebrity worship and mindless consumerism, then I strongly suggest that you quit reading now. You’re not going to like it here.
If however, you long for a society where harsh opinions are effectively brought to light regardless of losing potential admiration and sometimes in the form of a particularly vicious cyber kick to the teeth, then keep reading. I’ll be that asshole for you and I’ll try not to disappoint.
In a world as passive and egocentric as ours, it will be next to impossible to win them all.
But, I’ll take one or two.
