Dead Cat

I pepper-sprayed a wild dog that was running after our car after jumping off a 10 foot fence. How the huge beast got up there I have no fucking clue, but the motherfucker jumped down and charged so I had to hose it. Threw a flash-bang into an intersection a little later on in the day, stupid Iraqis for some reason don’t stop when large men with automatic weapons yell at them. I just don’t understand it. I know this may sound crazy but I think Saddam really had a deep understanding of the mentality of these fucks. Ok, granted, it is sickening to hear the stories of people that come up to you to tell you about how their mutilated bodies are from Saddam’s goon squads fucking them up and it doesn’t make me happy inside to hear about peoples whole families being raped and murdered right in front of them just for kicks, but when I sit there stuck in bumper to bumper with these Iraqi assholes not doing what is in the best interest of preserving their own lives I think that ultra-violence might be the only way to effectively reach their brains. It may be the only thing these fuckers understand. Yesterday we missed an IED exploding by a few hundred feet – heavy thump and a big brown mushroom cloud in the rear view. The insurgents had put a bomb in the crater made by a vehicle IED that slammed a US convoy about a week ago along BIAP highway (nobody was killed – except the suicide bomber). We hung out down in the “green zone” for about 5 hours.. theres no more coffee shop to hang out at so we just stayed at the team villa. There was a little dead cat in the street out front, I stole a few shots of it before we left it to be flattened by Baghdad motorists. (sorry L-bug – I think this might bum you out)

We had a pretty full day today anyway, I crashed out after the last run and only woke up when Noah asked if I was ready for dinner. Ive been trying to enjoy myself over here a little bit each day. Its hard to find time to enjoy stuff when your nose is shoved in shit with this work, but anyway.. it was a pretty nice evening tonight. We drove to the chow hall at camp Striker (the galley here on our camp is uber-lousy) and even though the sun had already set it was still a little bit light out. A dust storm was just rolling in and there was a giant yellow moon rising. It smelled like rain for some reason and the way all the vehicles headlights shone through the dust in the purple twilight was kinda nice. I was half asleep as we bumped past the strange sights and it didn’t even bother me that the window on my side of the truck was broken so that I couldn’t put it up. A group of shirtless soldiers working on a tank engine surrounded by huge armored vehicles. The way the welding torch or whatever the fuck it was splashed light out of their little cave was cool. Soldiers playing basketball on a extremely well lit court as the dust and darkness blew in it seemed like they were just floating out there away from everything. Fried chicken at the chow hall, we eat fried chicken every day here it seems like. Gurkas (Nepalese soldiers – hired contracually just like us but just as gate guards and shit) with surgical face masks covering their faces snapping off stiff salutes to us through the dust as we drove back into our own compound. I don’t think we even talked the whole time. After we got back I took a walk around to try and maybe grab a few
